Detroit's shopping isn't in a mall. It's four or five small clusters, each of which takes an hour.

**Eastern Market.** The densest block of independents in the city. Margaux & Max on Adelaide is a resale boutique for women and men — the racks turn over fast, so it's worth going twice. Tailored Detroit on Gratiot is a Black-owned menswear shop specializing in custom fits. Joe Porter's Fashion for the Man, further up Gratiot, is the older, plainer version of the same idea. Combine any of these with Anthology Coffee and you have a morning.

**Midtown.** 1701 Bespoke on Woodward does custom suits, shirts and tuxedos, which is the reason to go rather than browse. Third Man Records on Canfield is the record stop — Jack White's shop, with a pressing plant behind glass. Both are on the DIA's block, so the museum slots in between.

**New Center.** The Peacock Room inside the Fisher Building is the best-looking shop in Detroit, full stop: a women-owned boutique in a restored century-old room, and worth walking into even if you buy nothing. Carhartt's Cass Avenue store is the workwear flagship in the city that the brand comes from. Both are a short walk apart, with Tenacity Craft nearby when you're done.

**Avenue of Fashion.** Livernois north of Seven Mile, and the name is literal. Three Thirteen Store is the anchor — Detroit-made apparel, in-store pickup, a fixture of the strip. Lily's & Elise Tea House is the break in the middle, and Deli Plaza Delicatessen and Pizza Joint handle lunch.

**Pewabic Pottery.** Not clothing, but the best thing you can carry out of Detroit. The Indian Village studio has been making architectural tile and pottery for over a century, and everything on the shelves was made in the building. It's also a museum, so the visit stands on its own.

Most of these are small and independently run, which means Sunday and Monday hours vary. Call ahead if you're driving across town for one shop.
