Detroit has no single coffee street, so the crawl runs by neighborhood. Pick one of these three and do it properly rather than driving between all of them.
**Midtown, the long version.** Start at dose. detroit, which is the most straightforward good cup in the neighborhood. Walk to AWAKE Cafe, then to Kitab Midtown if you want somewhere to sit with a book for an hour. Finish at Kresge Court inside the Detroit Institute of Arts — museum admission required, but the room is a former Renaissance courtyard and worth it. Third Man Records is on the same stretch of Canfield if you need a detour.
**Eastern Market, the short version.** Anthology Coffee is the roaster's cup. Germack has been in the market for a century and does coffee alongside the nuts. La Ventana Cafe adds Cuban coffee and a different pace, and Trinosophes pulls double duty as cafe and art space. All four are within a few blocks — you can do this in ninety minutes.
**Corktown and west.** Alba on Michigan Avenue is the design-forward one. Lucky Detroit - Coffee Roasters & Espresso is the roaster. James Oliver Corktown is small and serious. Summertown Fresh Bar is the place to stop if you want something green in you before the fourth espresso.
**Worth the drive.** Sepia Coffee in Milwaukee Junction is one of the best rooms in the city. The Congregation in Boston-Edison is a church converted into a cafe, and dogs are welcome outside. Café Noir in the North End, The Roost in Woodbridge and Detroit Brew-ti-ful Coffee House in Rosedale Park are each the anchor of their own neighborhood. The Red Hook has two locations — the Greenway shop sits right on the Dequindre Cut, which makes it the natural halfway point on a riverfront walk. Lily's & Elise Tea House on the Avenue of Fashion is the one to end on if you've had enough coffee.
Three stops is a crawl. Five is a commitment. Space them with a walk between each and you'll enjoy the fifth.
